Wasootch Ridge
After a great breakfast of ham, eggs and whatever else we felt like eating in the morning, we packed our lunches and headed off to Kananaskis Country. It was a chilly morning and we suited up with some layers before heading out. The first 20 minutes saw several hundred meters of elevation up a steep incline and for a first day hike, many of us felt the burn! The layers quickly came back off! Once gaining some elevation, the hike became an extended ridge walk with stunning views of the Kananaskis Valley. Off to the south was a great view of Nakiska Ski Area, which was built specifically for the Calgary Olympics back in 1988. All in all, we hiked about 11 km and gained about 1000 m of elevation today.
Our group of students had a great hike today, and after a delicious past dinner, we relaxed for a bit and then headed down to the fire pit to talk about our day, play a few games and hand out our Rocky T-shirts.
Some of the quotes from the day...
"This was my first hike and I didn't fall off the mountain" Sara
"I had a long of fun doing the hike, but what made it best was doing it with all of you!" Sam
"I'm really glad the four of us came on this trip because it's not something we would normally do!" Zayna (Hailey, Claire, Sara)
"I was really happy Claire and I went up to the summit!" Hailey
The kids had a great day and are gelling into a wonderful group of hikers, as was evidenced by observations by Ms. Mitt's cousins who joined us today and commented on how great our students were.
